DSNY3 Dashboard Week Day 1: College Graduates

by Valerija Kirjackaja

Dashboard Week is arguably one of the most intense weeks in the Data School training programme. Each day, consultants need to produce a dashboard on a completely new dataset - some days, the data might require cleaning and preparation, other days it won’t. The topics are also a complete surprise every day.

The general rules of Dashboard Week are:

1. You must work independently, unless otherwise specified.

2. If data prep is required, you can use Alteryx or Tableau Prep. You may supplement the original dataset with additional data if you think it will help you uncover interesting insights, but the main focus should be on the data you are given.

3. You must create a sketch of your dashboard plan and show this during your presentation - even if you end up creating something that looks quite different to your original plan - we want to see your thought process and analytical journey. You are free to use any tool or just pen and paper for your sketch.

4. The dashboard you create must be uploaded to Tableau Public before presentations.

5. Before presentations, you must also write a blog detailing your work and thought process throughout the day.

6. At 3:30pm, you will present your data prep, sketch, viz, and anything else you think is relevant.

Though this might sound like a lot, remember that over 60 cohorts of consultants have gone through Dashboard Week. The key is to stay focused, scope your work in a manageable way, and make a plan.

For Day 1, your task is to analyse the data from the National Survey of College Graduates.2021. There are multiple datasets available for download - you are free to choose what angle you’d like your dashboard to focus on.

Make sure your dashboard includes a reference to the source using suggested citation.
