Modern Analytics Architecture

After a day of opening up new laptops and installing software it was time to delve into the world of data on Day 2. The morning consisted of session focusing on Modern Analytics Architecture, which entails the backbone of how businesses set up their analytics processes.

We began with a brief overview of the history of business intelligence tools, starting with the introduction of Excel which allowed business to make sense of their data for the first time. Years later, this was followed up by Alteryx and then Tableau which have become advanced industry-leading tools. Despite this, many companies do not stray far from Excel, which is part of a distinction that exists between traditional and modern analytics architecture.

Following this, we investigated the modern analytics pipeline and its six steps: Raw Data, Ingestion, Central Storage, Prepared Data, Trusted Data, and Visualized Data. This gave us an idea of the entire process of data visualization and data analytics from start to finish. As a cohort we gave examples of tools and software that we thought would be used in the modern analytics pipeline and subsequently allocated to the stage of the process we thought they would belong.

I am confident that this was a very valuable session, since it has prepared me for challenges that I may face when going on placement. The main concern would have been understanding the different ecosystems of the different companies that I would be walking into.

After learning more about data and the analytics processes I am excited to get stuck into my Tableau training!
