Today's task was to create an explanatory dashboard using Eurovision data entirely in Power BI!
I started by downloading the datasets and having a look through them to to get an idea of their contents as well as what sort of questions I could look to answer. The dataset I settled on using consisted of every song performed at Eurovision from 2013, along with their key characteristics including genre, language, BPM, liveliness score and more.
After doing some research on the competition I had learned more about how it works and its format, and decided to settle on a dashboard that would ultimately tell the user how to win Eurovision (or at least close enough)! To work out the flow of the dashboard, I thought about how a contestant may approach writing a new song to perform at Eurovision. This would start with choosing the genre, then key, then BPM and loudness, and finally the characteristics of the song. I concluded that the best way to do this was to analyse how past contestants have constructed their songs to discover any differences between winners and the rest!
To inform a potential contestant of the best genre to pick to give them the greatest chance of success, I created a bar chart to rank each genre by the average total points its songs receive, leading to the conclusion that an opera is the way to go! I then repeated this process with the song's key.
Next, I plotted every song based on their BPM and loudness onto a scatterplot and highlighted those that had won their respective contest to see if any patterns emerged. There seems to be a slight preference towards songs that are slower and louder than average.
Finally, I really wanted to use the gauge chart in Power BI so I did so three times! I wanted to look at the average values for selected song characteristic metrics of all the songs in the contest, and compare these values to the averages of songs that won. This way when writing their song, a potential contestant could get an idea of which direction to take it in terms of happiness, acousticness and instrumentalness!
Hopefully today's dashboard inspires a future potential Eurovision winner!
