Dashboard Week: Day 2

The task at hand today was to choose some tables from a wine dataset, clean it and get as much insight from it as possible and if there was time left at the end, to build a dashboard.

Due to a dashboard not being a main requirement, this made me take a more relaxed approach through the day in which i underestimated the time it would take for me to complete all my tasks.

I started of the day with a plan of exploring the data for about an hour then cleaning it for another hour and by starting to create charts by lunch. Then finishing pulling insights out by 2.30pm to practice and present.

what took place on the end of the day was nothing like my plan. I spent a lot more time cleaning the data, less time just exploring and i had no idea of where I wanted to go with my data.

What I learnt from today and will do differently in future?

  • To research about the topic at hand for 30 to 40 minutes at least, to begin with
  • To write some questions I'm trying to answer with the data before setting off to explore
  • writing down some questions from the exploration.
  • put things in tableau first to see how much cleaning is actually needed then go off to clean
  • pivot when needed. If the original plan is not working out or its taking more time than expected, narrow down and pivot.
  • Find different ways of showing what the data shows outside of bar and line charts. you can do this by exploring different chart types and seeing what are the optimal ways of using them

Today I learnt a lot about time management and scoping my work a little more true to the time it actually takes me to complete things.

Overall it was a partial success and a big learning curve.
