Fixed LoDs - What are they? What are they good for? When do you use them?

LoDs, standing for Level of Detail are calculations that can help you control the level of granularity or simply put, the level of detail of your expression. You can calculate LoDs using measures or dimensions without having to reference them in your view. You can group and use aggregations on fields that are not shown in the chart.

Now, the FIXED LOD can specify the granularity of the calculation independently of what is in the view. It computes values using the specified dimensions, without reference to the dimensions in the view. This is what the syntax looks like:

Points to Note:

  1. Curly Brackets - Must start and end an LoD, will appear blue
  2. Fields will have square brackets, will appear yellow
  3. After the dimension, must follow with a colon ':' and then an aggregate of a measure (e.g. Profit, Sales, Discount, Quantity etc).

This helps us to create fixed variables to be able to create variations of dashboards with our data.
