Dashboard Week Day 5: The Power of Food

Welcome to day 5 of Dashboard week!

Dashboard Week is about practicing working quickly through a brand new data set each day. Some days require data prep, some don’t. Some days have complex data, some don’t. It’s a total surprise each morning.

The rules for dashboard week are pretty simple:

  • You must work independently, unless otherwise specified.
  • If data prep is required, you can use Alteryx, Prep, SQL or Power Query, unless otherwise specified.
  • You must create a sketch of your plan for your dashboard and show this during your presentation.
  • The dashboard you create must be uploaded to Tableau Public or Power BI Service (and embed it into your blog). If no visualisation tool is specified in the challenge, you can choose yourselves.
  • You must write a blog post detailing your work throughout the day.
  • At 15:30, you will present any data prep, sketch, viz, and anything else you need to present.

The Task Today for DS59

You are going to be using Power BI to create an interactive visual aid to educate the public about different foods and their nutrients, taste, content, enzymes, health effects, you name it! The challenge exists in how to narrow down the scope, size and insights to fit on one screen.

What you need to do:

  • Retrieve the data from the downloads page at the Foodb website
    • Use the FooDB CSV file as your base information
    • You are allowed to bring in the image or other spectra data if desired
  • Design a single page visualization that fits on a 1920 x 1080 screen
  • Modern Interactivity is encouraged (click actions & image button slicers, DZV & Bookmarks); no drop down or list filters/slicers are allowed.
  • Prepare for your Presentation (10 mins max)
  • Write your blog post, include your plan, challenges, key finding and surprises and a link (embed your public Power BI report in your blog).

Enjoy!
