Dashboard Week Day 2: UK Street Crimes

The point of Dashboard Week is to get the consultants working very, very quickly through a brand new data set each day. Some days require data prep, some don’t. Some days have complex data, some don’t. It’s a total surprise each morning.

The rules for dashboard week are pretty simple:

  • They must work independently, unless otherwise specified.
  • If data prep is required, they can use Alteryx, Prep, Power Query or Snowflake.
  • They must create a sketch of their plans and show this during their presentation.
  • The dashboard they create must be uploaded to Tableau Public or Power BI Service (and embed it into their blog).
  • They must write a blog post detailing their work throughout the day, they're not allowed to start the day without the previous day's blog posted.
  • At 3:30pm, they will present their data prep, sketch, viz, and anything else they would like to present.

For day 1, the team will be analysing data about UK Street Crimes between September 2023 and September 2024 (select the relevant time frame and download crime data and crime outcomes here).

Use the data to build an Alteryx App that allows the user to pick a specific date range, category and area (using a map interface tool) or postcode to update a data source onto our tableau server/your Power BI workspace (or tableau public using google sheets) to feed into a Tableau or PowerBI KPI dashboard.

Use case scenario:

  1. User runs the app
  2. Selects area of interest and timeframe
  3. Viz updates accordingly
