Dashboard Week: Day 3 Timeline

Today we were required to use BallDon'tLie API to extract NBA data and visualize within Tableau. This required the use of Alteryx which is not my strongest skillset but this challenge has been a big lesson to me in terms of rearranging my plans! Here is a timeline of how I went about this task.

9:00 - 10:00 am

Had a look at the documentation for the API and there was a lot more data than I expected, I brainstormed some ideas and decided to build a dashboard which represents a NBA standings table for each team

10:00 - 11:00 am

Drew a sketch which showed the top 5 teams with the most wins overall and the bottom 5 within two bar charts and a pea in a pod chart with the minimum points scored and maximum for the season for each team

11:00 - 1:00 pm

Called the API with the parameter of all games. I came across the issue of not having a field for all the teams, I had two fields of home team and away team. I spent majority of the time trying to shape the data into a format which would work with my sketch but I was running out of time so I had to adjust my charts a little

2:00 - 3:30 pm

Adjusted my charts a little and formatted my dashboard, spent most of this timeframe making sure the functionality of the dashboard was working.

Overall, this was a challenging task which has taught me to map out the fields I need before I start sketching or even prepping the data - as this cost me a lot of time. Good lesson to learn before training ends! Here is my tableau public link:
