Dashboard Days 4&5 - #Data&TV

The Challenge

For day 4 & 5 of Dashboard week this week we tackled the Tableau Data & TV challenge.

I started thinking of my favourite TV shows and Below Deck crossed my mind, but in the end  I chose my favourite comfort show, Bob's Burgers.

In the data source, we had available data on Series, Episodes, Cast, Roles and Awards. For Bob’s Burgers I wanted to focus on ratings and awards. I jotted down the initial idea to have a timeline of the Seasons and then highlight the top rated episodes per Season. I also wanted to detail how many awards the series had been nominated for and how many it had won. And finally I wanted to compare the series IMDb rating with peer series -  American Dad, Simpsons, Great North & Family Guy.

The challenge was to create a more Infographic style Dashboard, so I really wanted to focus on design fitting to the series. Starting a sketch, I landed on creating the Dashboard like Bob’s Burger of the Day board.

My Sketch:

Once my sketch was finished I checked in with Jenny and got some feedback about adding some more analysis to fill some space left on the sketch design.

I started to explore the data more and build a template whilst considering what could be added.

The Build

A lot of time these 2 days was spent on design, in terms of creating a colour palette and finding images to use to make it fun.

The timeline was a lollipop chart with the bars length by the average episode ratings. A separate chart is above with burgers as the data marks showing information on the highest rated episodes for each season.

I then got images to use to represent Bob’s Burgers and its peer series and created a comparison of their series ratings.

In keeping with the comparison view and discussion with Jenny I decided to fill the space with a further comparison of the 5 series, by the average nominations per season (total number of nominations/number of seasons)

The awards section was more of a text/KPI style section.

Jenny advised me to change the charts to a more logical order in terms of the story which I did.

Feedback

I was aware everything on my Dashboard was appearing very small and presenting on the large screen this was apparent. The main feedback was around this and thinking about what could be done to improve this. Also with my titles and text to make these much bigger as it could help with what I was showing in the visuals.

Next steps

  • Tackle the size issue!
  • Increase my text size in titles

Once I’m happy with the results of the above I will add the hashtag and publish it visibly to submit into the Data & TV challenge!
