Makeover Monday - Power BI edition

This week, DS41 were tasked with completing our first ever Power BI Makeover Monday (MM). In honour of this special occasion, our dataset looked at MM itself!

The data covered every MM from 2016 right up to this week, including details on the size of the data set, who's week it was and what date it was!

My first task was to make a plan on how I was going to tell a story using the MM data. A recent theme I have noticed is that there can occasionally be a large disparity in the size of MM datasets, so I decided to explore this. I looked specifically to see if who's MM week it is (Andy, Eva, or Charlie) played a factor in the size of the dataset.

Next, I opened up Power Query (conveniently located within the Power BI Desktop application) and performed some simple tasks. I ensured all the columns had the correct data types and removed some unnecessary columns that had made their way into the data.

We have spent time this week looking at parameters within Power BI, so I thought this would be a perfect time to take inspiration from our examples and implement what we have learnt. When comparing the size of the data sets across who's week it was, I found that there was large disparity between the Mean and Median figures, as vary large datasets somewhat distorted the mean. I therefore decided to show the median size of the datasets as a bar chart whilst also giving the reader the opportunity to switch the view to see the mean figures using my parameter. Alongside this, I added some KPIs and put my finding in the title to round out my piece. Have a look below:

I have really enjoyed getting to use Power BI this week and can't wait to learn more and improve my proficiency on the tool. As always, I am more than open to feedback on my MM attempt this week!
