I wonder if it was a chemist that designed the tool icons of the "Preparation" section in Alteryx? There seems to be a distinctive chemistry theme. As a chemistry grad I like this themed approach, but I think you could enhance the intuitiveness of the icons, hence this dedicated post :)
I have outlined some changes that I would make:
Multiple Rows Calculation: The Multi-Row Formula tool in Alteryx is used for calculations involving multiple rows of data. It enables you to perform calculations across multiple rows simultaneously and create new fields based on these calculations. The current icon depicts a measuring flask with two droplets. I believe the intention is to represent multiple rows, with each droplet symbolizing a row. To better convey this concept, I suggest using a condenser as the icon.
The condenser has a spiral shape that creates the desired appearance of rows and provides a more vertical movement.
Multiple Columns Formula: The Multi Columns Formula tool in Alteryx functions similarly to the regular Formula tool but provides a generalized approach to perform calculations on multiple fields simultaneously, resulting in the creation of multiple output fields. The current icon combines a measuring flask with a stirring rod, indicating calculations happening in the columns. This representation can be confusing. Instead, I propose using a manifold system as the icon.
A manifold is a pipeline that splits into multiple taps, giving the impression that one input affects many columns.
Filter: The Filter tool in Alteryx allows you to selectively retain or remove rows from a dataset based on a Boolean condition. Currently, the icon portrays a prism separating light. I believe it would be more appropriate to use a filter funnel, which is a widely recognized symbol for filtering. I understand that the prism may have been intended to represent the true and false outputs in Alteryx, so perhaps the icon could include a flask underneath showing unwanted product in the filter and the desired product in the flask.
Formula: The Formula tool in Alteryx allows you to perform calculations and create new fields based on expressions or formulae. It enables you to manipulate data by applying mathematical operations, functions, and logical conditions to existing fields or constants. Currently, the icon represents a conical flask, which is acceptable. However, I believe a round-bottom flask would be a better choice as it has a visually pleasing shape.
Sampling: The Sample tool in Alteryx allows you to randomly select a subset of rows from a larger dataset. It helps in generating representative samples for data analysis. The current icon features a sample tube, which is excellent, and I would keep it as it is!
