Navigating the Path: Joining The Data School
In the first part of this blog post, I shared my experiences and strategies for transitioning from a business consultant role in a small market to becoming a data analyst in the bustling city of New York. In this second part, I will delve into how I discovered The Data School and the application process that led me to join their team. During my job search, I discovered The Data School. Although I initially had reservations about the program, further research and witnessing positive experiences shared by its members convinced me of its authenticity and value.
The Data School's model appealed to me as it offered a 4-month intensive training period and the opportunity to apply the acquired skills with clients across various industries. This model provided a great way to further my transition into data analytics while adding value to the team I aimed to join. After attending an in-person meet and greet at the New York office, I was impressed by the warm welcome and the coaching team's assistance with my application.
Data School Application Process
The Data School's application process stood out for its clarity and structure compared to the standard interview process (read more here). It involved the following steps:
- Join Tableau Public and find inspiration via Tableau Public or The Data School Blog.
- Create a data visualization (viz) using your chosen dataset.
- Share the viz on Tableau Public and apply through The Data School website. If shortlisted, participate in a video call screening.
- Finally, create a viz from a provided dataset and present it to a panel
This refreshing process allowed for a relaxed interview experience, focusing on my background, passions, and thought process behind the viz. The feedback received and the opportunity to sit in on a training session after the final interview added to the positive experience. Within a week, I received an offer from The Data School, which I gladly accepted.
I have learned that transitioning from a small market business consultant to a data consultant in a big city is an exhilarating journey filled with challenges and opportunities. It demands resilience, a growth mindset, and a hunger for continuous learning. A high level of determination and adaptability is required to adapt to a new work environment and navigate a competitive job market. However, by investing in personal and professional development, building technical skills, and embracing patience, you can overcome these obstacles and pave your way to success.
I am happy I was able to embrace the unknown, seize the opportunities, and embark on a transformative journey toward a thriving career in data analytics and consulting in the vibrant heart of New York.
