DS29 Training Blog - Week 1

Monday – Our first day involved setting up our laptops, learning more about The Data School and Information Lab and getting to know each other.

Tuesday – On Tuesday we started the real work, beginning with Alteryx.  Having never used Alteryx before I found this slightly daunting and it was overwhelming at first how many new things there were to learn.

Wednesday – By Wednesday we had already learnt enough of Alteryx to attempt one of the weekly challenges.  I definitely found this difficult and worked very slowly through it, but I know that with a lot more practice I will be able to get more of a grasp on the software.

Thursday – After having 2 full days of Alteryx, it was nice to have a bit of a break and start learning Tableau prep.  I found this far easier to understand and at the moment I think I prefer this to Alteryx.

Friday – On Friday we tackled our first project and presentation. Our task was to add a complimentary data set to our original Data School application to improve our analysis.  My greatest challenge was finding a suitable dataset that would work with my viz, after this I used Tableau Prep to clean my dataset before comparing my new data to my old data.  I decided to keep this simple by producing a line graph and in the end the presentation went well.  There was definitely lots of room for improvement but as this was just our first experience of Friday projects I was quite pleased.

Overall it has been a great week and I have thoroughly enjoyed learning lots of new skills, as well as meeting lots of new people at after work drinks!
