Dashboard Week - Day 2

Today we were tasked with making a dashboard which focuses on Analysis or an Infographic visualistion. The data for today came from CatTracker.Org and I chose to focus on Australia.

Requirements of the day included:

  1. Each person must work independently
  2. Data Prep is allowed
  3. They can choose to use all of the data or a selection: United States, United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand
  4. They must sketch their idea and include it in their blog which needs to be wrote before 4pm presentations

So here's my blog! Today started okay as I tried to figure out the best way to join the data together as there were no fields in common (A more in-depth look found that there in fact was). Here I started to prep the data and remove fields I did not want. I then played around in tableau to see what I wanted to make. I wanted to focus on the different sexes of cats to see if they behave differently and drew up a quick sketch.

My main idea was to focus on the movements of the cats throughout parts of the day to see if females or male cats move more/go further. I found that in cats that are younger, there is more movement but around the same area (my guess is their house). Older cats seem to roam a bit more than younger cats, and Mature cats act like younger cats. Within this I built a dashboard so you can compare a male/female or unknown sex cat with the opposite sex of the same age to see how their behaviors are different. It is hard to come to a conclusion within visualising the data in a more in-depth way, but certainly, from playing around with the maps you can start to see the trend that Male cats go further distances then their female counterparts. With more time I would of liked to delve into this a bit more and come to a stronger conclusion!

My struggles included:

  1. Too wide of a scope - did not manage to answer my main question fully
  2. Too much time spent on making a vision come true - one of my maps used table calcs and after I received help from Chris and Lorna we eventually got it to work - but it did not work the way I wanted so I had to scrap the idea

Good things :

  1. I did make an alternative map which is functional but not exactly what I wanted. Skateboard!!
