Use Cases for Dynamic Zone Visibility in Tableau

What is DZV?

It's been two years since Tableau's 2022.3 Release introduced us to Dynamic Zone Visibility (DZV). Creators can build better user experiences and more performant dashboards. Amazing actions have resulted from having fewer calculations to show and hide dashboard objects.

After using dynamic zoning to provide a client with dynamic date filters and rotating charts, I wanted to explore the many ways people are building UI features off a single checkbox in the dashboard Layout.

I started with Tableau's Documentation, practiced with Workout Wednesday Challenges, read other people's posts, and asked my colleagues how they approach DZV.

DZV Tips

  1. Sketch your dashboard layout to brainstorm interactivity.
  2. Configure all charts, then create parameters and calculations for controlling visibility.
  3. Build the dashboard with a wider width, laying out every zone.
  4. Set DZV one zone at a time.

DZV Actions

While practicing and exploring DZV solution, I realized a pattern of actions. DZV can be used to:

  • Swap
  • Navigate
  • Overlay
  • Drill down
  • Zoom
  • Annotate

If you have any more use cases feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn or on Convo (if you're from TIL).
