We got out data from https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/salmonid-and-freshwater-fisheries-statistics-2019/salmonid-and-fisheries-statistics-for-england-and-wales-2019 it was on fishing for salmon and trout in different parts of the UK.
My original thought process was to go through the excel file and clean up what I could as I thought that this might be quicker than using alteryx and it also gave me a chance to understand what the data was saying and try to think of what questions I wanted to answer with my dashboard. After figuring out what questions I wanted answer and the story I wanted my dashboard to tell, I made a plan of the data I would need and what to clean in alteryx. This just meant that I had less to clean as I had already figured out my focus. Since this data was for different regions within the UK, I intended to find some spatial data to supplement the given dataset however was unable to and was limited by the time constraints.
After cleaning the data I needed to, I made a plan on the kind of charts I would create and how I wanted my dashboard to look. I then put the data in to tableau and used data blending and cross data base joins to bring different tables together. I then thought of the kinds of graphs that would help answer my originally thought out questions. I put the data in to tableau and starting building the charts. I made a plan for the dashboard template however this later changed as I continued to make charts and change my focus.
The most challenging part for me today was understanding what we needed from the and finding a focus whilst balancing this with the time constraint. From today, I have learned how to quickly think through data prep and find key questions, tomorrow I hope to be a bit more time conscious and spend slightly less time planning so I can get hands on with the data more quickly.
