Lessons from Client Project Week 1

Work as a team

Within every Cohort that will be a range of skills and strengths, whether that be Tableau, Alteryx, presenting, communicating, design, whatever it is someone around you will be able to help in some way. So make the most of this, you are a team not an island.

Make the most of client catch ups

You will have a limited amount of contact with your client, so make sure you keep a note of everything you need to check with them. Even if you feel like something is obvious, it is always worth running it past them.

Decide on formatting early and be consistent

Formatting is, to an extent, objective. The most important thing here with your client projects is that your team all format their dashboards in the same way. Consistency is key when it comes to formatting (and design) so make a group decision and stick with it.

Compare calculations with others

When working on your projects it is extremely likely that you will be using the same measures and metrics as others in your cohort. For example, Sales and Profit usually make some appearance across all business analysis. You want to ensure that your calculations are consistent early on - the last thing you need is finding out Friday morning that your BAN calculations are not lining up.

Use Alteryx for prepping and leave the calculations for Tableau

Don't get me wrong, Alteryx is very good for cleaning and reshaping your data, but any calculations should be left for Tableau. So you need to calculate Profit? Load the Sales and Costs data into Tableau and create a Calculated Field. Doing this in Alteryx may result in constraining your data.

For 'challenges' you want to actually just recommend

State the challenge and then say what you would recommend. For example, Instead of just saying 'the industry terminology was new to us', follow it up with 'so we would recommend using a data dictionary and providing it to any future collaborators.'
