DS45 Dashboard Week Day 1 - StatsBomb Open Data

It’s time for the beginning of dashboard week! DS45 won’t know what topic they’ll be covering each day or which data skills they’ll need to embrace. Luckily they’ve had 4 months of training to draw from! Some general rules that will apply each day unless otherwise stated:

  1. They must work independently
  2. They must create a sketch of their plan for their dashboard and show this during their presentation
  3. The dashboard they create must be uploaded to Tableau Public or Power BI Service
  4. They must write a blog post detailing their work throughout the day
  5. At 4pm, they will present their data prep, sketch and viz

We have seen an increase in the number of people needing SQL skills, so today is all about practising SQL, before creating a visualisation in Tableau.

The data they’ll be looking at comes from StatsBomb, so they’ll have an opportunity to perform some football analytics. Their colleagues have already done some of the heavy lifting for them to get the json data parsed out in Snowflake, so DS45 just need to understand what data they have available and how it comes together. There’s a lot of data there, so narrowing their focus will be important today.

As always, they are welcome to bring in additional data to support their analysis if desired, but they’ll have to keep an eye on time and make sure to have at least a Minimum Viable Product ready for 4pm!

The data can be found on Snowflake as below:

DB: TIL_PLAYGROUND

Schema: PL_PACKAGE

Good luck team!
