TOP N PARAMETER CHANGE

The top N parameter change is a great way of adding interactivity to your work. The parameter change will allow the user to select their own range of values to explore. To start with, we can look at the Superstore dataset and bring in our customers ranked by total sales.

We can filter this data ourselves by dragging in the customer name to the Filters pane and using a top N sort function, however we want to start by setting up a parameter for the user. Click on the arrow next to the search bar on the left hand side, and select Create Parameter.

This box should then appear. We can call the parameter Top N Customers, and set our data type to integer as we want to create a select bar based around the number of values we want to see. In this example, the minimum is set to 5, and the max 50 with a step size of 5. This can be set to whatever range you want the user to be able to view, with the step size representing the increments in which the values will be added to the view. Once this is done we can click show parameter to view it on the right hand side.

We can now finish setting this up by adding in the measure we currently have shown, into the filter pane (CTRL and drag the measure from the rows pane).

A pane will pop up telling us how we want to filter our measure by. This is where we navigate to the Top section and set it to filter by field, with our Top N Customer parameter as the field. (Notice there is a selection for create new parameter in this dropdown. We can create the new parameter in this window instead creating it before).

Now when we move the Top N Customers parameter bar in the right hand side of the view, the values should change too. A Top N parameter change can be useful to incorporate as it doesn't need any actions to setup, and gives the user more flexibility in your dashboard.
