DS27 Training Blog- Week 11

This week DS27 got stuck in to Snowflake!

Monday: we had a full day on Snowflake with Katy today, it was really interesting to learn more about snowflake and put into practice the SQL we had learnt last week. At the end of the day we had our project kick off. This week’s project was internal and focused on getting us to work on our Snowflake skills.

Tuesday: the team rotated across using Alteryx, Snowflake and Tableau. This was a bit of a challenge for the group so we split into teams and worked together. Lemis was our PM for the week and did a great job ensuring everyone in the team got to work with all elements of the software stack. In the afternoon we had a session with Andy on more advanced SQL statements which was really useful consolidation after our previous SQL sessions.

Wednesday: we had the full day dedicated to the project today. We split off into teams to work on scheduling Alteryx workflows which pulled data from the TFL API, sourcing and joining other datasources in snowflake for later analysis in Tableau, parsing JSON data in snowflake, creating a star (or snowflake) schema for greater flexibility in Tableau, creating aggregated views in snowflake, and finally, connecting to the data in Tableau to visualize Santander cycle availability across London.

Thursday: in the morning we had an Alteryx refresher session with Ollie. The group decided to take another look at spatial tools and macros and see what’s involved in the Alteryx Designer Advanced certification. It was good to have a refresher on these topics as we hadn’t had the chance to use them too much in our projects so far. In the afternoon the team shifted back to our snowflake project and started to tie everybody’s work together.

Friday: in the morning we had more project time. We finalized the automation of our snowflake tasks and prepared for our presentation in the afternoon. Lemis managed a difficult project really well this week, and the team did a great job on fulfilling the brief and getting more hands on with all elements of the software stack.
