Dashboard Week - Day 3 - Brexit

The Task

Today is the final day of dashboard week for DS26. So far the week has been quite data prep heavy so Andy has given us the choice of which data files to use from this website: https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/who-we-are-and-what-we-do/elections-and-referendums/past-elections-and-referendums/eu-referendum/results-and-turnout-eu-referendum

Since I'm quite keen to get cracking with some dashboard building, I chose the 'Full set of EU referendum' data for the UK. Now, we could either create a KPI dashboard or a infographic style one, I decide to try the infographic although I've never built one to that style before so could be good fun.

The Data

With the data being split up by area code in the UK, I straight away go to search for some spatial data to map out all the different areas of the UK as I think this would work perfectly for an infographic. Who knew it was so difficult to source UK spatial data though? It took me many attempts to find exactly what I was looking for, this took up a lot of my time. But really it was my own fault as I only had to look as far as the The Information Lab to find the data! Thank you Craig Bloodworth for this very useful post: https://www.theinformationlab.co.uk/2015/06/01/uk-filled-map-geocoding-pack-for-tableau/

The Dashboard

I wanted to keep the design fairly simple as we only had a few hours to create the viz, I thought it would be nice to have a side by side view of the map of the UK along with a bar chart for each area showing whether it swayed to leave or remain. I had difficulty fitting all the areas into one view like I had originally planned but because there were 300+ areas this looked awful on one page! So I decided to do a set action where you have the overall regional results and then you can click into each one of those to see the area's results which also filters down the map. Overall I was happy with how the dashboard looked, I kept it fairly simple but I think the messages are clear, here is a snapshot of the final view:

This is also visible on my Tableau Public:
