The Salesforce Certified Tableau Data Analyst exam validates a professional's ability to transform data into actionable business insights using Tableau Desktop, Prep and Server/Cloud. It's designed for analysts with ~ 6 months of experience and covers the below:
- Data Preparation (24%): Connecting to data, using Tableau Prep to clean "messy" datasets, and understanding joins vs. relationships.
- Exploration & Analysis (41%): Creating calculated fields (Level of Detail expressions, string functions), using parameters, and spotting trends.
- Content Creation (26%): Building dashboards that are actually usable, using "Actions" to make them interactive, and applying design best practices.
- Publishing & Governance (9%): Sharing work via Tableau Cloud/Server and keeping data fresh through extracts and scheduling.
In this blog, I will be sharing my experience of the exam and how I prepared for it to pass first time!
Exam Overview
As of April 2026, the exam was 65 questions in total (including the 5 non-scored questions) with a passing score of 65%, and timed for 105 mins. However, I found that there was plenty of time to review my answers at the end.
Tip: flag any questions you're unsure of and go over them at the end - some later questions helped me remember concepts covered in earlier questions.
I thought the exam was reasonably within the specifications detailed on the Trailblazer guidance website, with questions spanning all 4 topics. There was a strong focus on fixed LODs and Tableau server/cloud content so I'd highly recommend that you revise those topics thoroughly. My most important advice would be to read the question carefully, some of them were worded strangely.
Server/Cloud Questions
- The dashboard alert has stopped working, where do you need to go to fix this?
- How can you add more subscribers to a workbook?
LOD Questions
- Nested LODs (Select the right syntax) - Be familiar with the syntax especially for IF statements inside a fixed LOD
- INCLUDE/EXCLUDE statements - Be familiar with when you'd use them
- In a table visualization with Region, Segment, Product Type and Sales how would you show only the total sales for each Region or Segment (depending on what is brought to the view)?
Data Source Questions
- Which data sources can a Tableau Desktop user see when they first connect to a site on Tableau server?
- What type of filters can a user see in the Data Source filter dropdown, when different worksheets have different filters applied on them?
Other Questions:
- String Functions, Numeric Functions - Be familiar with which ones apply to what data type
- Questions involving the order of operation in Tableau (can't remember specifically, but very important!)
- How would you merge two tables into a single source? (specific example with snapshots of the tables)
- What's the default join type of a Data Blend?
- Correct CASE statement - Be familiar with the syntax of CASE using multiple conditions
- What's the Rank of a specific record in the view?
- When would you use data web connectors?
- How would you calculate the total sales year to date?
- Chart specific questions asking to troubleshoot a specific aspect, i.e., why is this box plot only showing one mark?
- Can you spot floating containers from the tiled container dropdown?
- Table Calculations (Moving Average, Running Total, Index and Rank) - be familiar with when you'd use each and the configuration window
Tip: If you don't know the answer, try ruling out the answers that you know are 100% incorrect to get to the right answer. Most of the incorrect answers are obvious but not always the case.
Resources that I found useful:
- Get Tableau Certifications Practice Exam - Good set of questions that resemble the style of questions in the exam. The mock exam has a total of 36 questions with 2 hours of allocated time.
- Trailhead Cert Prep - The official site has different modules that focus on the key exam topics, each covering the subcategories within. It has an overview of the exam structure and difficulty level, with a quiz for each topic to check your knowledge.
- Data School Blogs - Perfect solution if you are looking for an in depth explanation on pretty much any topic, search for it here!
- Google Gemini - This helped me build a custom mock exam that represented the difficulty level and populated the questions based on the weighting of each section. Use a simple prompt like: "Generate a mock exam that represents the difficulty of the Salesforce Certified Tableau Data Analyst exam and the full questions range of 55 questions spanning all topics covered". Gemini will create the mock exam which is pretty close to the real thing and can be scalable if you need more practice!
