Learning SQL in Snowflake

Snow flake is a relational database that enables data storage, processing, and analytic solutions that are faster, easier to use, and more flexible than most competitors.

What makes Snowflake different?

Snowflake is not the only cloud-based DBMS, but also provides  a comprehensive UI that supports all popular web browsers. Other competitors you need to download SQL workbench but snowflakes works in your browser. Making it easy to log in from any device without needed SQL workbench installed.

Retains your work

Most people may not like to shut down the SQL client on their  laptop for many days until reaching a milestone of a project because they don’t want to lose their SQL statements. Although you can save them into script files and import next time, but its an extra step and to re-import those cause some headache.

With Snowflake, you can close your browser tab any time. Whenever you open the URL, your worksheets will always be there, even you change to another machine because everything is stored in the cloud.

It is not uncommon to want and view previous queries you have executed . With Snowflake, all your query history will be retained for 1 year. Whenever you want to view what you have done before, simply go to the history to find it.

Syntax in Snowflake

Snowflake uses SQL querying language. So if you have used SQL before you should be right at home. In SQL you have to spell everything exact. Snowflake does not have auto complete like MySQL workbench which really helps in preventing Spelling errors.

Cost

Snow flake charges per query since it is cloud based. As of this writing, the cost per-second per-credit for Snowflake's Standard edition is $0.00056. This means that the cost for a query to run for one minute on an X-Small Snowflake warehouse would be about $0.03. So you should be cautious about the size of the queries you run and if you are running a query to preview data you should limit the results to decrease the size of the query.
