Today in DS46 we were tasked with reimagining and resketching a sports viz while learning the core concepts of answering questions with data. One of my biggest takeaways was that it is important to understand WHY we are making a viz.
To practice this skill I used this dashboard by Ravi Mistry which is an overview of the match stats from Tottenham's 0-2 loss to Liverpool in the champions League Final. I reimagined this viz to answer the question 'As a Coach, when I view the the viz I want to be able to see WHY Tottenham lost'.
In sports context is key, especially the position of events on the pitch/field. The original dashboard doesn't contain any information as to where key events took place, such as where shots were taken from, or passes completed. My reimaging makes this a focus of the viz providing a map that could show where shots, interceptions or even key passes were made.
I would keep the shot timeline, with the benefit of showing where players where when the shot was taken. This is all with the hope that given the new positional contextualisation, the question of 'Why did Tottenham lose to Liverpool in the Champions League Final' can be answered.
