The third task of this week was to develop a professional CV in Tableau. The idea was that we used different kinds of visualisations to summarise our experience, education and skills. There is actually a vast amount of examples of CVs in Tableau Public and they were a great source of inspiration.
Data
Today we were in charge of collecting and preparing the data for our dashboards afterall we are the ones with the best data about ourselves. I built an Excel sheet in which I described every position I had over the last 10 years and the start and end dates of each of them. Moreover, I added information about my education and skills.
Plot Choice
I decided to use 4 plot types to depict my professional history:
- A Gantt Chart to show every position I had with start and end dates as well as employer. To build this chart I had to create one calculated field with the duration of each employment. Please, check this video to know more about how to create a Gantt chart;
- A Scatter Plot to show all my skills by interest (0-10) and level of proficiency(0-10);
- A Tree Map to provide information about my projects and which skills I used in each of them;
- A Dot Plot in a single line to show my education history;
My Impressions About The Task
- It is important not to get lost in time! It is really easy to spend a long time worrying about the details of your CV because it is your marketing ad for employers. You want to make it look almost perfect, but that is not possible during the Dashboard Week because of time constraint. Therefore, prioritise the most important elements;
- There are great CV examples on Tableau Public and on the Internet in general. For example, I used Canva, an online platform to create simple designs, to find good colors and layouts;
- It is important to find the balance between being creative and professional with your CV dashboard. Sometimes, Tableau inspires us to be more artistic and informal, but you still have to keep your audience in mind - potential employers.
Three days out of five are done! I am contented with my learning so far and curious about our next missions!
