As we approach the end of our training at The Data School in Hamburg, we still have one mission: to overcome the dashboard week. This is a week when cohorts develop one dashboard per day, from 9 am to 3.30 pm. We are provided with a dataset and some instructions and have to build a dashboard and present it to our colleagues.
Data
On our first day, the task involved a dataset about movies that were produced over the last 100 years. Some of the information we had was about ratings, year and country of production, genre, duration and language. The dataset was part of challenge created by Tableau in cooperation with IMDb.
Horror vs Thriller
I have always wondered what is actually the difference between thriller and horror movies. Experts say that horror movies are produced to scare and involve supernatural events, blood and monsters. On the other hand thrillers are more about surprising the audience and having a lot of ups and downs, like a roller coaster. But apart from that, can data further help me understand these differences?
To answer this question, I chose to build a dashboard exploring the differences between thriller and horror movies.
The Insights
Here you can see my dashboard and as you explore it, some insights you might get are:
- Thrillers are better rated by the public compared to horror movies, perhaps because the latter are more rated by viewers;
- In general, the English language is more common in horror movies compared to thrillers;
- The duration of thrillers is longer;
- Both genres have grown exponentially over the last century, but horror has grown faster.
My Impressions About The Task
Finally, I would like to write some of my thoughts during the first day of dashboard week:
- Working with floating alignment in Tableau, in order to achieve more flexibility with customised backgrounds, can be quite annoying and you may end up with alignment problems;
- I almost had no time to prepare my presentation, which might affect the comprehension of my plots by the audience;
- I had fun exploring the movies and finding out some nice facts about movies;
I am already looking forward to our second day of dashboard week and curious to see what the dataset is about!
