Thomas Smith

Thomas joined The Information Lab in late 2023, driven by a lifelong passion for data and computing. From a young age, he was fascinated by programming and problem-solving through code, which eventually led him to the world of data analytics. While his initial interest was purely technical, his role at The Information Lab has allowed him to develop a strong ability to work with stakeholders, combining his analytical skills with real-world business problem-solving.

At The Information Lab, Thomas has had the opportunity to work on projects across a diverse range of industries, from air cargo to telecommunications. Through both intensive training with industry-leading experts and hands-on experience with high-profile clients, he has rapidly developed his technical expertise alongside strong interpersonal and client relations skills.


Academic Background & Early Interest in Data Science

Thomas holds a First-Class BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, where he discovered his passion for data science and analytics. His final-year undergraduate research focused on machine learning, large language models (LLMs), and sentiment analysis, deepening his knowledge in the field. Securing a role at The Information Lab straight after university has allowed him to apply and expand his knowledge from the very start of his career.


Industry Experience & Project Highlights

Thomas has worked on a variety of projects, delivering impactful data solutions for leading organisations:

  • IAG Cargo

    • Led a solo project building data pipelines integrating five different data sources and COTS systems related to employee performance. Developed a suite of 10 interconnected dashboards, featuring advanced row-level security, to enhance visibility into employee data and performance metrics across the organisation.

    • Sentiment Analysis - Conducted both cross-sectional and time-series analysis of multi-year employee feedback using pre-trained transformer-based models. Subsequently, evaluated the feasibility of developing an in-house LLM to improve accuracy and precision in future sentiment analysis.

  • Virgin Media O2

    • Maintained dbt Cloud models tracking customer website and app activity from sources such as O2 Priority and My Virgin Media.

    • Developed a business layer to condense large datasets from Google Analytics 4 into self-service models, enabling business stakeholders to analyse macro trends in customer web and app journeys via Tableau.

  • Luxury Skincare Brand

    • Created a suite of five dashboards using Google Analytics 4 data to enhance ecommerce performance insights.

  • Rail Transport Organisation

    • Led the migration of six Google Looker dashboards to Tableau, demonstrating Tableau’s usability and strategic benefits for the business.

Thomas continues to develop his technical skills, staying at the forefront of the latest advancements in data analytics and machine learning. Through his work at The Information Lab, he combines deep technical expertise with a strong client-focused approach, helping businesses unlock valuable insights from their data.
