Thomas Duong

Thomas’s passion for data began during his undergraduate studies, where he became fascinated by quantitative research methods, particularly using R. His interest in social and political development at the time led him to investigate the impact of government policies and spending, especially their influence on support for radical political parties in the UK and Europe. Later, during his postgraduate studies in International Political Economy, Thomas focused on the complexities of environmental governance and the green transition, with a special emphasis on the economic drivers in post-Soviet countries.

Now, as a Data School Consultant at the Information Lab, Thomas is deepening his knowledge of data while building the essential skills to become a successful consultant. He has gained invaluable experience using Tableau, Power BI, Alteryx, and SQL through a number of projects:

  • Developed a series of dashboards for a department store company to track and assess the adoption of Tableau training across different departments. This helped the stakeholders monitor engagement trends, compare participation across business areas, and identify areas for improvement.

  • Created dashboards for two Premier League football clubs that provided a player form overview and performance insights into both team and individual metrics, focusing on player loan opportunities and comparing playing styles across leagues.

  • Developed a disruptions dashboard for a rail company to compare passenger travel behaviour on days with disruptions (like severe weather) to typical days.

  • Led the development of dashboards for a cricket club tailored for coaches, players, and team management, which provided both quick and detailed assessments of player readiness and performance benchmarks.

  • Delivered an introductory Alteryx session focused on formulas for TIL clients, covering basic functions in a hands-on setting. This included explanations of the Alteryx interface and practice exercises on string, numeric, date, and conditional functions.

In his free time, Thomas is passionate about martial arts, especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Grappling. He also enjoys hiking and spending time in nature.
