Tanya Fischer

Tanya holds a Master's degree in the field of Labour Market Economics and Human Resources. During her studies she got in touch with data analysis and statistics and decided to leave the HR world soon after graduation. Now she's enjoying the broad variety of data projects and the opportunity to learn and grow at the Data School.

In her first placement, she supported the development and improvement of Tableau dashboards as well as the creation of data preparation workflows in Tableau Prep. During that time, she also learned a lot about the energy sector and how to upskill other people in Tableau.
In her second placement, next to a few specific dashboard requests, her main focus was the development of a KPI overview dashboard for the clients of a logistics company.
Her third placement aimed at the support of the German team of The Information Lab in giving Tableau beginner and advanced trainings for clients, both remote and in person.

In between placements she's conducted smaller projects for clients from a variety of industries, including: aviation, hospitality, leisure & finance.

Since joining the DS in February 2022, she has acquired Tableau's Data Analyst certification and both the Core and Advanced Alteryx certification. Currently, she's working on improving her Power BI and SQL skills.

Tanya is also very interested in social issues and equality which is why she, together with a colleague, spoke at the Data + Women Germany Tableau User Group in November 2022. In her free time you'll often find her keeping busy: renovating, gardening, running.. she'll always find something to do.

Creating an Info Overlay with Dynamic Zone Visibility
By now most of us have heard and had our way with Tableau's Dynamic Zone Visibility feature. In preparation for a webinar I hosted last months I was looking for different ways to implement DZV but it wasn't until last week that I found another super easy but yet super practical use case

Building a Power BI Portfolio
So, I had some time at hand and played around in Power BI. It's been a while since I used it last so the dashboard I built was super basic just to get a bit of a feeling for the programme

Changing Column Headers the Easy Way
Creating tables can be a pain in Tableau but even though one of the main purposes of Tableau is to leave tables behind you will now and then still find yourself creating them at least as part of your dashboard

Germany, but make it hex map
As Heinrich pointed out in his previous blogpost [https://www.thedataschool.co.uk/heinrich-preuss/how-does-the-hexmap-work-for-germany] , there isn’t really a good, at least half representative hex map of Germany. Yesterday I made it my task to change that

Dashboard Week Day 3 – UK’s Gender Pay Gap
Today we spent our time analyzing government data on the Gender Pay Gap in the UK. As I learned today apparently every company above 250 employees has to report the percentage of differences between mean/median hourly pay and bonus payments

Dashboard Week Day 2 – Elon’s Twitter Career
I never thought that I would actually end up having fun with something Elon Musk does on Twitter. But today we got to analyze his tweets over the last 12 years. The data we received can be downloaded from Kaggle if you want to have a go yourself

Dashboard Week Day 1 – Migration to/from Hamburg
As in every cohort of the Data School the Dashboard Week marks the end of our training period. This means that each day we are getting a data source in the morning, which we then have to prep and visualize in a way that our dashboard answers some sort of question and/or adds value

Dynamic Top N with Sets and Parameters
Tableau is all about interactivity and giving the user of a dashboard the option to choose a view. Let’s say we want to give the user the possibility to see the Top N states by profit. N in this case is the number he or she can choose, so either Top 5, Top 10 or.. you get the idea

Using Containers When Dashboarding
One of the things that makes Tableau nice and user friendly is the number of times you can simply drag something and drop it wherever you want and it’ll look somewhat between “quite nice” and “that’ll do”

Hexbin Heatmaps in Tableau
I like maps. They don‘t always add value to a visualization but when they do they are great for adding context. For example in this week’s Workout Wednesday [https://www.workout-wednesday

One fun part when using spatial data in Tableau is that you not only can create dots and areas on a map but even routes or paths. Today we learned how to do that by looking at the London bus routes.
