Sam Search

After completing his A-Levels in Business Studies, Spanish and Physics, Sam went into the Recruitment industry whilst studying a Level 3 NVQ in Sales. After 18 months doing this, he then spent some time travelling in New Zealand/Australia before then coming back into a Field Sales position within the Events’ industry for 3+ years.

After being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sam decided to start studying multiple data courses on Datacamp, including one on Tableau, which led him to look at career opportunities using this. Sam explored Tableau further than the online course did by looking at a wide range of sports’ data and realised that this was something he wanted to learn more about. Naturally the Information Lab provided the perfect opportunity for further learning and development into this new career path.

His first placement was with Paramount where he trained staff to use Tableau, whilst his next 2 placements were working at PwC in an internal role building Tableau, Alteryx and Power BI solutions.

Outside of work, Sam enjoys watching and playing a range of sports such as Football, American Football and Darts. He also likes spending time socialising with friends, listening to music and playing video games.

Project Manager Diary - Days 2 and 3
After a morning of studying, the team cracked on with their specific areas of the project as appropriate. Fortunately by this point, we've all had a fair amount of experience of how to approach the client work and as such I have full confidence in the team knowing how to best achieve our goal

Week 2 - Project
For our project this week, my cohort have been tasked with analyzing a previously published viz from Makeover Monday. I have selected a viz with a subject matter very close to my heart (unfortunately) looking at Arsenal's worst ever Premier League start towards the beginning of this season

Using Parameters to control the top results shown
When handling a lot of data looking at everything we have can be overwhelming, so sometimes it's more valuable to get a snapshot of the analysis by looking at the Top 5, Top 10, Top 50 results etc..

Grouping Geographical Data
On day 1 of learning Tableau Desktop with the Data School I learnt how to group individual pieces of geographical data and visualize this on a map (previously I had only been able to use all, one or none of the locations provided in the dataset!)
