Nora-Ann Weststrate

Nora recently completed her PhD in synthetic organometallic chemistry in which she also got some exposure to photophysics (i.e., big data). It was during the latter that Nora was exposed to the data design and data analytics process and discovered that she really enjoyed the whole process. She decided to make a career move and now looks forward to learning what it means to be a true analyst from the best people (using the best tools) out there!

Apart from work, Nora loves creative cooking (even if it doesn’t always turn out successful), laughing at people who call people who call a ‘braai’ a BBQ (yes, she’s proudly South African) and will always enjoy doing things outdoors!

Reflections of 4 months in The Data School (DS8)
The beginning The first time I met Ollie, Jevon and Robbin was at the DS7 graduation party, which was great. That was the first time we were thrown out in the wind as we had to be creative with a joke on the spot with music blaring, lights flashing and a bunch of strange people looking at us

On Day 3 of #DashboardWeek we isolated data from the Rick & Morty API. This particular blog post will be focused on the Alteryx workflow rather than putting everything together in Tableau

Using reference lines to create chart padding in Tableau
When is graph padding needed? There are often cases where it is not possible to fix an axis as it is updated with either parameters or filters which often leads to labels or min and max points which will appear crowded or does not appear neat

Updating headings and labels with applied filters
It is often necessary to update graph headings, axis labels or other informative information depending on interactive filters and even when no filter is applied to data. In this blog I will be referring specifically to a #MakeoverMonday that I did on girls’ and women’s issues of five countries

Tableau: creating interactive colour legends
There are often situations when a dashboard needs to be completely interactive. Using a colour legend assigned to a specific chart represents the colours you use, but it is often necessary to dig in deeper without necessarily using the chart to isolate a specific category

DS8 Week 2 in Review
Last week in The Data School we kicked the week off with Tableau, Tableau and more Tableau. This ranged from basic training in what does the different coloured pills mean to drawing the difference between discreet and continuous and how Tableau interprets each of the measures

The ins and outs of The Data School and how it fits into the bigger picture
Before I even started applying for a position in DS8, I had a couple of questions as to what the company structure looks like and what happens behind the scenes

DS8-Day 1
The very first day for DS8. I must admit it’s been a long time since I actually felt like a proper student again
