Having excelled in subjects like maths and physics in school, Joe enhanced his passion for problem solving during his Mechanical Engineering Degree at the University of Southampton.
Following this, he embarked on a career spanning more than eight years in the Metropolitan Police, first serving as an officer in Westminster and later spending several years in the Territorial Support Group. Joe's passion for learning grew here as he picked up many new skills do deal with a wide range of situations - from surveillance operations, to public order situations, to terrorism incidents and many more.
Having developed an interest in data skills through online courses in his spare time, Joe sought out a career transition so that he could combine his passion for learning with his new found love for data, and the Data School at the Information Lab was the perfect opportunity.
During his time in the Data School, Joe has put his skills into practice in various projects:
Using Tableau calculations link unrelated datasets to help a football club analyse the loan market and identify where players have increased most in value.
Sourcing and joining spatial data using Power BI / Power Query to a data set provided by a client to help a rail company with their timetabling for major events.
Creating a dashboard for a strength and conditioning team at a professional sports club in order to help them monitor player performance and flag any issues as they arise.
