In an everchanging and uncertain world of data, Abi believes that simplicity is key. Self Service BI is at its best when built over a strong foundation allowing users to easily create actionable insights. Whilst working as a technical specialist in a large Audit team, Abi rebuilt the underlying data structure of the Digital Audit instead of creating a dynamic ETL solution – recognising that this would be a more manageable and robust solution after he left.

Abi loves a challenge. Whilst on placement he was tasked with creating a Power App with no prior knowledge. He was able to go from nothing to a working PoC Power App in two weeks utilising online resources to learn about Power Apps and Power Automate whilst keeping up with a semi-weekly sprint structure. Abi is an avid learner and has used this experience as inspiration to continue learning about the Power Platform and more (see GitHub).

At The Information Lab, he is playing an active role in revamping the Data School curriculum to introduce Power BI, alongside Tableau and Alteryx. Prior to the joining the Data School Abi was a tutor and enjoys helping the community learn. Whilst at the University of Liverpool he held many doctor sessions as well as an introduction to Tableau crash course.

Abi is not afraid to ask questions to better understand a client’s needs. Whilst working with a cruise package firm, he was tasked with creating a solution to reduce inefficiencies in the cruise package. After working closely with the client, he was able to understand the cruise package system, decompose it and create a solution that would allow any passenger to mix and match their packages to increase the number available to them.

Following his Economics and Statistics degree at UCL, Abi is eager to maximise his time at the data school; engaging with various industries, refining his communication abilities, and leveraging his previous experience participating in Tamil public speaking events to become a well-rounded consultant and analyst.

Dashboard day 4: Finality
Final day of dashboard week, and we're already off to a worse start than yesterday. Unlike yesterday's cheese data (I like cheese), today's data was about HR Analytics (don't like HR as much as cheese). Today's dashboard was a bit more reeled in so back to basics, 3 KPIs 3 Charts job done

Dashboard day 3: Ability
Today's dashboard day was all about data preparation - and so I'm writing this blog without a dashboard. We were given a website of cheese information from https://cheese.com/. Each person had 3 letters of cheeses to download data from (A,B,C in my case)

Dashboard week day 2: Creativity
Unlike yesterday where we had a goal we were aiming for, today's dashboard had no restrictions. We were given a lot of data w.r.t. previous FIFA World Cups and the only requirement was to be as creative as possible. When given creative freedom I tend to get a bit stuck

Dashboard Week Day 1: Accessibility
Day 1 of dashboard week was centred on accessibility, which was helpful since it was fresh in my mind from the day before. The Brief Glasgow City Council have provided us with incident reports (e.g

Using a Filter as a Go to Sheet Button
In Tableau there are two common ways of navigating from one dashboard to another. 1) The navigation button in the objects pane and 2) the go to sheet button found in the dashboard actions pane. But did you know there’s a third?

Automatically dropping columns and rows with a selected number of missing values in Alteryx
Normally, when thinking about which columns and rows to drop from our data, we start off by dropping all the columns and rows that are 100% missing. But what happens if we wanted to get rid of columns where over 95% are missing etc?

The Devil's in the details
I lost a bet and a post is my forfeit. The way I lost said bet however, does give rise to an interesting discussion about paying attention to small details. Read more to learn more about both the bet and the importance of being thorough.

Makeover Monday: Visualisations are Coming
Warning, spoilers for game of thrones ahead. I found an interesting visualisation with the game of thrones kill count data, but I reckon there's still room for improvement. Read this post to find out how I got on.

A Visionary and a Guide: the need for dashboard creators and presenters
My first post discussed speaking in a formal setting and over the past week I’ve been left wondering – why? What is the importance of presentation when dashboards are as detailed and interactive as they are now?

Speaking 101 - Problems with Presentations
No this isn’t a guide on how to speak like Thomas Shelby. Instead, the focus of this post is on things to consider when trying to sound interesting - even if you’re not sure it is.
