Day 1 = Culture shock

by Angelica Obi

If you're a person that's used to working in a very strict environment, where everyone is formally dressed and laughter is a myth, The Data School WILL take you by surprise. We got the warnings, "it's really chill", "everyone dresses super casually", we even got a picture of what people usually wear, but I guess I didn't really understand just how different it would be till my first day.

The morning started with everyone having pastries, sandwiches and coffee. We were lucky to start on a day when the office gave us breakfast. When it was time, we were taking to a little room and given a rucksack with everything we might need for our time here. There were a lot of programs to install, and a few glitches here and there which were solved by the old turning it off and on again trick. When all was installed, we were given the do's and don'ts, introduced to all the software we'd be using and told what to expect over the coming months.

Basically, the morning was fine............. and then it was lunchtime.

I personally felt a little intimidated by all the laughter and fun that was being had during lunch IN the office. There was a game of table tennis going on, people were grabbing drinks from the fridge and ice cream from the freezer.

The second thing that surprised me was the unofficial rule that questions, and messages that required action, were not to be sent over the weekend. Coming from an environment where working late nights and weekends were almost the norm, this made me really happy. I am EXCITED to have my weekends to myself!!

I don't know if it's just me that's having this experience, and in no way am I complaining (I absolutely love it and have already posted about the office on my Instagram), it's just been a day of firsts and I know it's going to take me some time to get used to it and start fully embracing the office culture.
