Dashboard Week Days 4-5: Data+TV

So here it is the end of our training at the DS. Our final project was the tableau #DataplusTV. We had data from IMDb about every TV show and their ratings and actors.

This project immediately made me start thinking about lots of opportunities listing out every tv series I liked and a lot of ideas about those shows. However, a lot of these ideas had already been done in some capacity so I had to pivot away from them and move to another idea. Which was originally looking at the trend of Parks and Recreation. This then turned into comparing Parks and Recreation to The Office (US) and this then came to comparing the 4 biggest workplace comedies of the late naughties and early 2010s.

This being:

-Parks and Recreation

-The Office (US)

-30 Rock

-Brooklyn Nine-Nine

I then started sketching out this idea.

As I went through the process of making the visualisation and dashboarding I realised that some charts had to change which occurred while I was making the dashboard. Initially I had sketched a coxcomb chart to be in the centre of the dashboard with the angle of the chart being related to the number of episodes each show had. With the size of each section being related to the average rating of each episode of the show.

On each line chart, I wanted to highlight influential episodes for each show. For The Office and Parks and Recreation I was able to highlight these episodes e.g. when new characters arrive, births, marriages, people leaving the show. However, for the other 2 shows I am not as knowledgeable about them so I had to speak to those who are confident with them.

After a while organising my dashboard I am at a place where I am comfortable with it.
