Thursday morning we were tasked with applying for the Data + Movies challenge, Normally dashboard week tasks are due to be complete within the day. This time it was slightly different, we would have 2 days to work on it. We were also tempted by the tableau prize of a free T-Shirt.
I started by downloading the data set and loading it into tableau prep. This is where I ran into my first problem. The data set was massive and was taking ages to work in tableau prep. So I took the approach of looking at the headers I had and thinking of focusing on some interesting areas. This is where I noticed that there was field titled "Billing (Position in cast)". From this I knew that I wanted to narrow my focus and look into the pay position of a particular Actor. I thought about some of my favorite films and then decided that Jonah Hill would be the focus of my info graphic. From this I decided to look at his pay position over the years. I found that in the early years of his career his average pay position increased pretty sharply and then stagnated.
The first film where he was the highest paid actor was the infamous Superbad, so hence I had my title. "Is Jonah Hill's Pay Superbad?" My analysis then led to looking at whether there was a particular genre where he was better paid in comparison to his co-stars. I wanted to go a level deeper and look at whether or not there were reoccurring actors that where paid more or less than Jonah Hill, I didn't scope for this as I knew that I was already going to struggle to complete everything I wanted. I had it in my back pocket for further analysis if time allowed.
Overall I am pretty happy with how I did in completing the task. I like to think I hit the objective of making it visually appealing and also included some good analysis. Below is the final product that I will be submitting to the Data + Movies Challenge.
