Create Hierarchies
Method One: Drag one pill onto another in the Data Panel:
For example, here we dragged the "State Province Name" pill onto the "Country Region Name" pill and we instantly create a hierarchy. You then name the hierarchy. I'm calling it "Places."
Another method to create hierarchies is to click on the drop down arrow on the pill (right hand side) in the data panel, and scroll down to Hierarchy > Create Hierarchy.. (or Add to Hierarchy).
You can also add to existing hierarchies by dragging pills into them:
Once you create a hierarchy, you get + buttons or options to select the level of granularity desired for your data analysis. For example, for Country Region, you can expand the pill to include State, City, and Postal Code, or just combinations of them:
The benefit of hierarchies is that when you drag a pill from hierarchy into Filter, you get subsequent filters that are children of that specific parent pill only, instead of getting all the data points that are children of that parent.
For example, in using hierarchies with filters, we can use a filter selection for Germany, and then apply a subsequent State filter that will only list German states for selection, as opposed to listing all states in the dataset, which would include states from other countries, such as US, Canada, etc.:
Lastly, to remove a hierarchy, just click on the down arrow on the right hand side of the pill (that's part of hierarchy), and select "Remove Hierarchy."
