Creating Sets for Current Year in Tableau Desktop

Sets in Tableau define a subset of data based on certain conditions. These subsets can be used for various purposes, such as comparing segments of the data, creating filters, or highlighting specific data points. When it comes to time analysis, sets can be particularly useful in isolating and comparing specific time periods, allowing for a more granular examination of trends.

Sets in Tableau may be preferred to filters for current-year analysis if we require dynamic updates and precise control over subsets. Unlike filters, sets dynamically adjust to ongoing trends and offer options for isolating specific time periods within the current year. This flexibility may make sets the preferred choice.

Here's a quick guide on how to create a set for observations in current year:

  1. Right click on the desired Date dimension
  2. Select Create > Set...
  3. In the Edit Set window, go to Condition (second tab)
  4. Select 'By Formula' (third option)
  5. Write this formula:
    YEAR(today())=YEAR([Date])

All Done. Your set is ready to go.
