Parameters in PowerQuery

Parameters can be used in PowerQuery to choose where the data is sourced from on the desktop, which is very helpful when sending projects around.

To create a parameter from a folder, firstly find the folder you're looking to upload, and copy the file path. You can do this by right-clicking the folder and selecting 'Copy as Path'.

Now, in PowerQuery go to Get Data>> More, and select Folder.

Then, past your file path into the field (remember to remove the quotation marks on either side!) and click on 'New Parameter' under the 'Folder path' title.

Then, rename the title to something more suitable (the title of the table with 'Parameter' at the end is a safe bet), and add the file path copied earlier into the 'Current Value' field.

Then press continue, and feel free to load or transform your data as needed.

If you're looking to upload different data with a new file path, go to the Parameter you created under 'Queries' and then 'Manage Parameter'.

Then go back to 'Current Value' and change it to the new file path with the new data.

Now since the source has been changed, the new data should replace the previous data.

Hope this helps 😄
