In our first week at the Data School, we learnt that how to split data in Tableau Prep Builder. This tool is used to separate data into distinct fields using a separator in the value. This can be a comma, a dash, a word or even a space - just so long as separates the data into the data fields that you're after.
There are 2 types of split in Tableau Prep Builder: Custom and Automatic

When using Automatic splits, Tableau Prep Builder independently determines what the separator is in the data field, and splits columns accordingly.
F0r Custom splits, Tableau Prep Builder lets you choose how the data is separated, as seen in the image below. Here you can determine (1) the separator, (2) which order the data is split from (left to right or vice versa), and (3) the number of fields that will be produced.

Depending on your data set, you can use either type of splitting to separate your data into separate fields before going on to data analysis.
