How to Poly-Build: Drawing the line.

Poly-Build is a tool found in Alteryx which is used to create a polygon from a given set of points. In order to start creating a polygon using Poly-Build you must first have a set of points to which you can reference, in the example below, I have the Latitude and Longitude points of some storms across time.

Before creating the polygon, I need Alteryx to recognise these values as actual Geopositioning values (Latitude and Longitude), for this you can use the Create Points tool.

Alteryx has automatically recognised what the values are and has populated them into the correct fields.

The Create Points tool will generate a field called Centroid, which you can view in the browse tool, this displays the points created by the Latitude and Longitude values.

In order to generate the storm paths, you will need the Poly-Build tool, within the configuration you will need to select the Sequence Polygon as we want to connect the points on the map together.

Using the points which we have generated, we now need to connect the correct points together. To do this you will need to group the values by the Storm Name field and then have the sequence field value as the Date. In essence, this will connect the individual storm's location at each date value which one another, creating a line.

If you wanted to find more information about the paths you could use the Spatial Info tool which can be configured to generate fields with additional information. Using this example you could find out the distance that the storm travelled by selecting the Length (Kilometers) output; this will calculate the distance between the start and end, Latitude and Longitude values.
