Dashboard Week Day 4: Childhood Obesity in the UK

by Andy Kriebel

There’s been lots of complaining from DS18 about the first three days of Dashboard Week being more about data prep than dashboarding. I’ll change things up today for them. Today they’re going to take part in Viz for Social Good, a community project to help drive social change through data visualization. The team will work on a project for Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Charity.

We need beautifully designed dashboards that can explain the nature and causes of childhood obesity in the UK, with a focus on Lambeth and Southwark

While the deadline to participate has passed, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ can always use more takes and insight into the data. The data can be found on the Viz for Social Good website here. Today’s requirements:

  • Must use Tableau 2020.1
  • Must use a custom Mapbox map; they can create one via Mapbox Studio)
  • Must use animations
  • Must use either set or parameter actions

The focus should be on design and analysis. The visual appeal is important as these vizzes are often shown in public settings (so it needs to look good printed) and the design should considered being used on web as well. It’s a tough balance to do both in one dashboard. If time permits, a mobile version gets them extra brownie points with the coach.
